The Bakalanga of north-eastern Botswana and south-western Zimbabwe are historically, as well as linguistically, associated with other Vashona groups living in Zimbabwe and Mozambique. The prehistory of the Vashona is contentious, its cultural antecedents can be linked to the emergence of early iron age civilisation of the Zimbabwean plateaux by the third century AD.
